Angelina Jolie Joins Daughter Zahara in Alabama for Speech on Period Poverty at Mother-Daughter Brunch
Angelina Jolie recently showed her unwavering support for her daughter, Zahara Jolie-Pitt, as the 20-year-old took the stage to speak about period poverty. The Academy Award-winning actress, 49, attended the fourth annual Women in Training Inc. Mother-Daughter Brunch in Montgomery, Alabama, on March 1, where Zahara served as the keynote speaker.
The event aimed to raise awareness about period poverty—an issue described by the National Institutes of Health as the lack of access to menstrual products, education, and sanitation facilities for women and girls. Zahara, who became a member of Spelman College’s Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority in November 2023, used the platform to advocate for the cause.
Adeyela Bennett, President and CEO of Women in Training, expressed her excitement about Zahara’s participation. “We are truly honored that Zahara Jolie-Pitt will speak at our Fourth Annual WIT Mother-Daughter Brunch about her passion to end period poverty, which is the mission of Women in Training,” she said, according to WAKA 8 Action News. She also acknowledged Angelina’s presence, stating, “We are thrilled to have Angelina Jolie supporting her daughter and our goal of ensuring that every girl and young woman has access to the products she needs to thrive.”
Angelina adopted Zahara from Ethiopia in 2005 when she was just seven months old, during a visit with her eldest son, Maddox, now 23. The Maria actress shares six children with ex-husband Brad Pitt, including Pax (21), Zahara (20), Shiloh (18), and twins Knox and Vivienne (16).
Beyond their advocacy at the brunch, Angelina and her children have been actively involved in humanitarian efforts. In January, they participated in relief efforts for families affected by the recent wildfires in Los Angeles. A source close to Jolie told PEOPLE that her children have been volunteering across the state, assisting in gathering and distributing essential supplies. “She visited the firefighters at the Rose Bowl and has a close connection with the team at World Central Kitchen,” the insider revealed, noting that Angelina first collaborated with the organization during her visit to Ukraine in 2022.
Jolie has often spoken about the importance of embracing and respecting different cultures, particularly when it comes to Zahara’s Ethiopian heritage. During a TIME 100 Talk in 2020, she reflected on her daughter’s deep connection to her roots. “She is my family, but she is an extraordinary African woman,” Jolie said. “Her connection to her country and her continent is her own, and I stand back in awe of that.”
Through her activism and support, Jolie continues to encourage her children to engage with important causes, emphasizing empathy, learning, and meaningful action.
