In an era where philanthropy is often overshadowed by fame, Chicago Cubs star Dansby Swanson has written a different story. He not only plays hard on the field, but also gives hope off the field. He recently moved the community by publicly donating his entire $6.9 million prize money and sponsorship earnings to build a homeless shelter in Chicago.
Swanson shared: “I’ve been fortunate to have a platform to make a difference. And if I can use that to bring a roof over my head, a sense of safety, and hope to people who are suffering, then that’s how I want to use my success.”
The “huge” donation will directly fund the construction of 150 new apartments and an additional 300 shelter beds for homeless people – people who have lost faith in society. The project also includes job training programs, psychological support and financial education – to provide not only housing, but also the opportunity to rebuild their lives.
Cubs head coach David Ross said emotionally: “Dansby is not only a great player, he is a great person. His actions are a reminder of the responsibility that we – those with influence – have to do.”
Born into a family that values community service, Swanson has always kept his heart close to the vulnerable. He has seen the change that even small acts of kindness can bring, and now he is taking action to make a bigger impact.
“No one deserves to face life alone. We all deserve a place to call home, a place where we feel safe and loved,” he said.
