Archaeologists in California find 40 million-year-old artifact in gold mine

January 21, 2024 by Pham Hien

A team of archaeologists in California, USA has made a groundbreaking discovery when they found artifacts dating back 40 million years old inside a gold mine in the city of Angels Camp.

Artifacts include bones, shells and combs dating from the Eocene period, about 40 million years ago. They are found in ancient sediments beneath the gold mine.

According to scientists, the existence of these artifacts shows that the land of present-day California was once the bottom of the ocean. They also provide clues about the natural world and creatures that lived 40 million years ago.

This is considered one of the most important archaeological finds in North America in recent decades. Archaeologists hope to find more prehistoric specimens in the area in the future.
