In a stunning show of quiet heroism, Houston Astros star José Altuve has gone beyond the ballpark to help rebuild lives torn apart by the catastrophic floods in Texas — and in the process, he was forever changed by one little girl’s voice.
While headlines celebrated his new role as co-sponsor of United Way Worldwide’s mission to rebuild 300 homes for displaced families, it was a handwritten letter from 9-year-old Emilia Cruz that stole the heart of the MLB veteran — and soon, the nation.
Emilia, who lost her home in the floods near Houston, wrote the letter from a shelter on borrowed notebook paper:
“Dear Mr. Altuve, I don’t know baseball but my dad said you are a champion. Thank you for giving us a chance to have a new house. I hope you win all your games because you’re helping us.”
At first, the letter went largely unnoticed. Volunteers shared it on social media, but it was buried under game stats, debates, and offseason noise. For days, her words were drowned out.
But the letter reached Altuve — and when it did, it brought him to tears.
“This letter reminded me why we play, why we give, and why we never stop caring,” Altuve said in a rare personal message. “Thank you, Emilia. You are the real hero in this story.”
According to United Way, Altuve’s donation will directly fund at least 40 homes, as well as emergency kits and education scholarships for children in flood-ravaged communities. He has committed to personally visiting the rebuilding sites — including Emilia’s — in the weeks ahead.
