Ex-Navy SEAL Jason Redman Once Joked His Wife Should ‘Run’—How They’ve Stayed Married for Nearly 24 Years

Jason and Erica Redman

Marriage is challenging, but for retired Navy SEAL Jason Redman and his wife, Erica, a few simple rules have helped them navigate the ups and downs of nearly 24 years together—including surviving a life-altering injury in Iraq.

Jason, 49, recalls warning Erica early in their relationship about the difficulties of being with a Navy SEAL. “I’m going to be gone a lot. It’s dangerous. Sometimes I won’t be able to tell you where I am. I’ll miss holidays. Honestly, you should run,” he joked. That line became an ongoing joke in their marriage, one they still tease each other about today.

Instead of running, Erica, 47, stood by his side, proving that communication, teamwork, and a sense of humor are the keys to a lasting relationship. Now, they’re sharing their insights in their new book, Mission: Invincible Marriage, which offers practical advice on building a strong and enduring partnership.

One of their biggest lessons? “Your spouse should be your most important teammate,” Jason says. They believe that instead of competing in a relationship, couples should work together while still pursuing their individual goals and dreams.

Their marriage was tested in 2007 when Jason suffered a severe injury in Fallujah, Iraq. He was shot seven times in the face and arms and endured over 30 surgeries at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Rather than feeling sorry for himself, he displayed a sign outside his hospital room that read:

“If you are coming into this room with sorrow or to feel sorry for my wounds, go elsewhere. The wounds I received I got in a job I love, doing it for people I love, supporting the freedom of a country I deeply love. I am incredibly tough and will make a full recovery.”

After retiring from the military in 2013, Jason transitioned into motivational speaking and even launched a whiskey seltzer company. Meanwhile, his relationship with Erica continued to evolve.

“As we grow, we become different versions of ourselves,” Jason says. “But what hasn’t changed is our friendship and love for each other.”

With nearly 24 years of marriage behind them, the Redmans are proving that with communication, resilience, and humor, love can stand the test of time.
