Narrow Escape: Lucky Impala Outsmarts Hungry Hippos and Wild Dogs

October 29, 2023 by Pham Hien

When a ᴛᴇʀʀɪғɪᴇᴅ antelope tried to flee a band of wild dogs by running into a river, it was met by two much more ᴅᴀɴɢᴇʀᴏᴜs predators. In Bᴏᴛsᴡᴀɴᴀ’s Khwai River, two enormous hippos were waiting for the defenseless impala and were not going to let it go without a struggle.

One of the large creatures quickly ᴄʟᴏsᴇd its jaws around the small critter before the two of them crashed down on its body in an attempt to drown it. The fortunate antelope managed to flee the enormous animals after being thrashed around in the water and return to dry land.

Hannes Lochner, a 43-year-old professional wildlife photographer, took the pictures in the Okavango Delta area in July of last year. That was the kind of sight he loved to photograph, he remarked.

He was glad to see a happy ending because it was a wonderful narrative to watch develop. This kind of occurrence hasn’t, in his opinion, ever been depicted. Such things most certainly don’t occur every day. The impala just had a Bɪᴛᴇ on its leg after its struggle.

Hannes captured the photographs while observing a herd of impalas flee a gang of wild dogs. The incident was not an unique one, as another impala is said to have run into the water an hour earlier but was drowned and ᴍᴜʀᴅᴇʀed by the ferocious hippos. In addition to this, a second antelope managed to escape fully unharmed, while a less lucky one was eaten by a crocodile in the river.
