“This is the heartbreaking moment dozens of monkeys watched in vain as a wild python strangled one of their troop.
The incident occurred on a mountain path in Prachuab Khiri Khan, Thailand last Thursday (24/10) afternoon.
The python pounced on the primate and large numbers of monkeys surrounded the snake.
However, each time they ventured near, the python reared up and bared its deadly fangs. Tragically, they could only watch as their fellow monkey was slowly crushed to death.
An elderly local man also tried to intervene by hitting the snake with a stick, but his efforts were unsuccessful. Onlooker Supattra Pranim it was having a day-trip to the area when she noticed the large group of monkeys.
She was shocked to see one of the animals being strangled by the huge python, believed to be around 10ft long.
The incident has sparked outrage among animal rights activists, who are calling for better protection of wild animals in Thailand. They are urging the government to take action to ensure that such incidents do not happen again.
The python is a common species in Thailand and is often found in forests and mountains. It is a non-venomous snake and usually feeds on small mammals, birds, and reptiles.
However, in this case, it appears to have mistaken the monkey for its prey.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting wildlife and their habitats. It is essential that we take steps to protect wild animals and ensure that they are not harmed or killed.
We must also be mindful of our actions and be aware of the potential consequences of our actions on the environment.”
